The question is answered, right answer was accepted
Which template would be best as a starting point or should I wait for magazine templates to come out?
I'm using the consumer platform
Here are some other examples of great looking grid based templates:
The Squarespace blog is also a good example of a grid blog.

the new template (or soon to be template) https://seth-godin.squarespace.com is a step in the right direction I think, and has some interesting and unique ideas
... but my usual Squarespace criticisms apply :
Looks nice but is not user friendly for navigation. The all too often seen Squarespace philophosphy of putting a clean uncluttered look before usability is all too apparent. eg Photos have no headlines or intro text, until you hover over them. Really? How many users are going to bother hovering over each item to see what its about?
Its not commercially practical for a commercial website that generates income from ads and user traffic There are no sidebars, or menu navigation. Most websites at a minimum need menu driven navigation for usability , so its ruling out a big part of the audience and market for news/magazine style templates.
In many aspects the seth template is similar to theverge.com, something I've always hoped Squarespace 6 theorectically capable of doing, but without adequate user navigation and some flexibility for being more than just another squarespace photo centric index page, squarespace will have failed to address the news/magazine template sector again.

Be aware this Squarespace update may help some folks....
There has been a major update to a new summary block v2, which supports grid, lists, autogrid and a carousel layout with meta data for events, galleries and blogs. More details here :
This is great news I think, Squarespace have really delivered a massive update here and listened to customer feedback.
Up to 30 items can be displayed in the new summary block.
This new more flexible summary block would go some way to enabling anyone to create their own magazine / news template.
For fully featured magazine / news template I suspect that will require a completely new Squarespace template, ( please vote and comment on this thread)

One current option still is the Minsk template. Although no longer advertised you can still use it. It is the only template that Squarespace have released that has a grid based blog index. It displays blog excerpts/titles in a grid format together with an optional picture. It only works if you have a multi blog site though, because it only displays the top level blog excerpt for each blog, ie one title/excerpt per blog
The blog index on Minsk is responsive, let's the user determine the number if columns and although it doesn't feature unlimited scrolling it seems to have no size limit i.e. it all loads at once. You can have more than one index/grid per site.
I would be very interested in hearing from other users who have tried the index on minsk and seeing their results.
Be aware everything I've mentioned is in the style settings and display blog picture and excerpt needs to be switched on - I think it was off by default
Here is an example of Minsk (only available for 10 days as its a test) http://stewart-phillips.squarespace.com/new-index/
Over to you .. Someone else needs to try it I think. Very few people have used this template and this index feature as Squarespace never advertised it had a blog index.
